Bizarre mountains, lousy weather

Iceland, July 2014: Part 3 of 5

Skjaldbreiður, the large shield volcano that is also prominent from Þingvellir rises in the south.

A lake that exists on the map was dry.

At the Mosaskarð we left the 4x4 track again. Before that we enjoyed good views towards Hekla and Gullfoss (you can see the park area and it's spray)

Nýifoss, the "new waterfall" that exists since 1929 when a big flood from a glacial outburst created this outflow of Hagavatn. The former outflow, Leynifoss is now a dry canyon.

The weather was dreadful, we spent one day at the FÍ hut Einifell and walked the next morning in torrential downpour towards Staka Jarlhetta. We used a short period without rain to dry our wet clothes.

Then the rain came back with full force for more than 24 hours.

Unfortunately we went out of food. So we used a short spell of good weather in the evening to walk in the direction of Skálpanes where a food parcel waited.

The spires of the Jarlhettur looked spectacular from the distance...

...but we had no more time for a detailed exploration due to the rest days in bad waether before.

We found a nice sheltered camp in the shallow crater of Skálpanes, an old shield volcano.

We happily received our food parcel from the Mountaineers of Iceland and entered another area...

This journey was planned as a walk to meet some interesting places like the bizarre Jarlhettur range which was one of the most important areas to explore for me. Unfortunately the weather was against these plans...

Route: Langafell - Þórórlfsfell - Linuvegurinn 4x4 track - Mosaskarð - Fagridalur - Far bridge - Einifell hut - Hagavatn - Staka Jarlhetta - Jarlhettur - Skálpanes (first food package)
