Sellönd

Sellandafjall was our landmark in the first days.

The first morning was promising: Low temperatures, great vistas and just a bit of wind.

Sellönd: Wide views over pure snow, drowned lava and some mountains in the distance.

Hagalækur, where snow and wind formed a winter canyon that stopped us for this day.

A mighty storm with plus degrees arrived by the evening. For more than seven hours we had to fix our wall of snow again and again. The warm wind melted it away in a frantic manner.

After midnight the temperatures dropped below zero and we found some sleep. The next morning greeted us with sunny weather. The ruined snow-wall reminds on the insane night before.

We found a passable snow bridge over Hagalækur.

A raven accompanied us at Botni. Sigurðarskarð, the mountain pass that leads to Askja, in the background.

We nixed our initially plans to reach Askja and planned to head in the direction of Herðubreið instead.

Grænavatn - Sellandafjall / Sellönd - Hagalækur - Kráká - Suðurárbotnar

The first days of the ski trip led us through the area around Sellandafjall, called Sellönd. A lot of wind, blowing snow but also sunshine accompanied us on the way to Suðurárbotnar. Alas, we decided not to head further South to reach the Askja Caldera as planned via the Sigurðarskarð.You find a more detailed description under the pictures...
