Colours in the shadow of Bárðarbunga

Vonarskarð

The last part of my hike through the Ódáðahraun*. From the Kistufell along the Gæsavatnaleið to the beautiful Vonarskarð and Nýidalur. Contrary to the dry lava desert Ódáðahraun the proximity of the huge (and dirty) Vatnajökull changes everything. Bárðarbunga, a mighty central volcano is the focal point. Torrential glacial streams want to be forded on the way to the Vonarskarð where wonderful geothermal areas and colourful mountains welcome the lonely visitor...

* Indeed the only "accepted" boundaries of Ódáðahraun are the rivers Jökulsá á Fjöllum and Skjálfandafljót. To the south the lava of Trölladyngja dissappears under glacial debris very soon. So it may not be correct to add the Vonarskarð to the Ódáðahraun area. Be that as it may, in my opinion it is a nice border to the great desert in the Northeast...

Route: Gjóstuklif - Rauðá - Vonarskarð - Snappadalur - Göngubrún - Mjóháls - Nýidalur
